Public Art
Joe Slack is an accomplished public artist with sculptures installed across his native Oklahoma. Joe’s public work includes sculptures in the timeless look of weathering cor-ten steel as well as painted metal in a variety of vibrant colors.
OKC Beautiful Downtown OKC
Joe was selected from a national call for entries by OKC Beautiful to design and build a 660 feet long relief mural, “Birds Watching OKC Lightning Thunder Dance Party” in the heart of the Midtown District OKC, 2019. The work runs 2 whole city blocks from NW 7th-9th on the Classen Blvd South bound median. The installation has over 110 dancer and 36 birds up to 72” in hieght.
I-35 Edmond Oklahoma
“Headlines” was a purchase award by The Edmond Arts Commission and OnCue Corp in 2018. The sculpture is 20 feet tall by 8 feet wide and comprised of cor-ten steel and over 60,000 pounds of concrete.
Altus Oklahoma
“Strengthening The Voids” was a corporate commission by NBC Bank 101 Sequoyah Ln, Altus, OK, in 2017. The five piece installation is comprised of powder coated steel pieces ranging in height of 52”-106”.
OCU Oklahoma City University
“Puzzled” was purchased by Slack’s alma mater OCU for its permanent collection to be displayed outside the Norick Art Center 2017. The work is comprised of cor-ten steel and measures 65” tall x 44” wide.
Midtown Vets Oklahoma City
“T-Bone & Sassy” was corporate commission for Midtown vet in downtown Oklahoma City, 2016. The two-piece installation is powder coated steel and each sculpture measures roughly 7 feet tall and 7 feet wide.
Norman Oklahoma
“Direction” was awarded in a regional call for entries for the Downtown Public Library, Norman, OK, 2016. Composed of powder coated steel and cor-ten steel and measuring 126” tall by 48” wide.
Metropolitan Library System Commission
Joe was selected from a national call for entries to design and build nine sculptures for Southern Oaks Library in Oklahoma City. The commission was awarded in January of 2012 and and installed in September of 2012. The sculptures range in size from 36" in height up to 108".
3rd and Broadway Edmond Oklahoma
"Voids and Foliage No. 2" was purchased by the Edmond Visual Arts Commission in May 2012 and installed on the NW corner of 3rd and Broadway August 2012. The sculpture is 68" x 8" x 6" and is a cor-ten steel with a natural finish.
Kelly Median Edmond Oklahoma
"Substance" was purchased May 2012 by the the Edmond Visual Arts Commission and placed on the median on Kelly Ave. off 15th Street in August 2012. "Substance" is 78" x 24" x 13" and is steel with a powder coat finish.
Boulevard median Edmond Oklahoma
"Voids and Foliage" was purchased by The Edmond Visual Arts Commission in May 2012 and placed on the Boulevard median of Wyane Ave. "Voids and Foliage" is 99" x 23" x 10" and is cor-ten steel with a natural finish.
Infant Crisis Services Center Commission
A ten piece commission that consisted of 8 outdoor powder coated steel sculptures ranging in size from 36" to 78" tall. The commission also included two 120" long by 20" tall wood wall sculptures. The works were installed in February of 2009 at 4224 N. Lincoln Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK.
Earlywine Park
"Intestinal Fortitude" was purchased and installed in February of 2009. This work is located at the entrance to Earlywine Park in SW Oklahoma City directly in front of the YMCA. "Intestinal Fortitude" was purchased from the Oklahoma City Public Art Competition where it had been on display at the Oklahoma City Municipal Building from October 2007-September 2008. This sculpture is 77" x 24" x 12" and is steel with a powder coat finish.
Classen Circle
"Who in Motion" was purchased and installed in February of 2009. This work is located on the SW corner of Classen and NW Expressway in North Oklahoma City. "Who in Motion" was purchased from the Oklahoma City Public Art Competition where it had been on display at the Oklahoma City Municipal Building from October 2007-September 2008. This Sculpture is 72" x 23" x 10" and is steel with a powder coat finish
Boulevard median Edmond Oklahoma
"Clone Cube" was purchased by The Edmond Visual Arts Commission in May 2010 and placed on the Boulevard median between Clegern and Wyane Ave. Powder coated steel measuring 102” tall by 58” wide.
